- BelligerentSexualTension: Internet memes were still a few years away from developing, but upon running into a huge fleet of warships set in ambush by Thrawn, Admiral Ackbar observes that "it appears to be a trap". And again, in the first book, Han says his smuggler contacts are unwilling to work for the New Republic because they suspect a trap. Admiral Ackbar, on the New Republic's ruling council, wryly says "Because of me, no doubt." It makes sense in-universe, since Ackbar's species has gotten a reputation for being hard on smugglers.
- BigBad: Both Inverted and Hand Waved: the book starts out with Snape giving Bellatrix (and by extension the readers) a detailed accounting of himself during the previous books to make it plausible he could still be working for Voldemort despite the previous buildup of him as a bad-mannered but otherwise trustworthy good guy.
- CaptainObvious: Both Caelan and Fletcher show signs of this with Skulduggery, the best friend. Valkyrie dumps Caelan and Fletcher.
- CrystalSpiresAndTogas: Basically what each Polis looks like to its inhabitants.
- DeathGlare: Vengeous. It makes people rupture.
- EldritchAbomination: Several, including guest appearances by Cthulhu and other Lovecraftian creations. A few novels suggest this also applies to the Time Lords and the Doctor too.
- EternalSexualFreedom: Gunnar and Spite
- ForeignFanservice: Inverted as blonde-haired, blue-eyed Anderson is regarded as ugly by Thai standards.
- HelpfulHallucination: Very early on the four main characters from the Black Arts games start appearing to Russell. This seems to be purely a literary technique since there's no sign of drug use, head injury, or (aside from this) any serious psychological issues. They offer encouragement and occasionally advice. May be a case of Imaginary Friend as well. Or see this page's entry for Dreaming The Truth.
- InsectoidAliens: The Ghast.
- InvokedTrope: Phineas Darkkon, to a T.
- JustifiedTrope: Blork's
dog poodnoobie, Lunk.
- NoTellMotel: Unfortunately, many of Savannah's cases involve the Blue Moon Motel at some point.
- NotBloodSiblings: Marburg-Amberlee. It works, but it co-mutated with the cure for the common cold and the combined virus is what causes zombies.
- ObliviouslyEvil: The gentleman with the thistle-down hair has no idea that what he's doing to his human "friends" is anything but kind and generous.
- ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Egrieak
- SecretSanta: Tad's class participates in one of these, with Tad as a secret Santa to a girl that he likes. It bombs badly when he chooses chocolate as his gift and she thinks that her Santa is trying to make her fat.
- ShortStory: Taken to its logical extreme.
- StuffBlowingUp: subverted, in that many characters are quite religious, practicing faiths more-or-less indistinguishable from modern religions, including pioneer-style Protestantism, Sunni Islam and, largely for purposes of kicking the dog, heavy metal-style Satanism. Edenists are overwhelmingly atheist, however. They don't enforce atheist or any other beliefs, but Edenists definitely lay a mild stigma on believers.
- TheHeavy: Sayle, who gets far more screentime than his boss, and moves the plot until the final chapters.
- VillainProtagonist: Stitch-Face is a Jack the Ripper-esque serial killer who describes himself as a monster. He also saves Alaizabel from the Fraternity and delivers a Karmic Death; his role in the story is aiding the heroes, but his motivations are anything but heroic, never mind his methods, leaving it unclear on which side of the divide he lands.
- WhatTheHellHero: The Stable Time Loop. Which renders all those Fanfics in which the characters Peggy Sue themselves back in time to fix things all the more incompatible with the canon.
